Myth 1: Not everyone can be hypnotized.

Fact: Hypnosis is a natural state. If you choose to be hypnotized, you will be.

Myth 2: I’ll say private things or share secrets.

Fact: In a productive session, all of your talking is done while wide awake, time in state is to receive positive suggestions and visualize and integrate them.

Myth 3: You’ll make me cluck like a chicken.

Fact: I have zero interest in your clucking talent…unless you want to explore it, we won’t.

Myth 4: My mind is just so strong, I don’t think it would work on me.

Fact: As above, this is a natural state, your strength of mind will only benefit your practice.

Myth 5: You can be hypnotized against your will.

Fact: Actually, you might be, but most probably by television or video games, not a hypnotist. With a hypnotherapist, you must give your consent to be hypnotized, and you will be keenly aware of the process. You always have the ability to come out of the state.

Myth 6: Hypnotism isn’t working if the subject is aware of the hypnotist and of being hypnotized.

Fact: Though your conscious mind is relaxed (by choice), your whole mind is always present. I want you to hear what I say.

Myth 7: You can get stuck in hypnosis.

Fact: Because this is natural to you, you always have the ability to come out of hypnosis. I will say that after feeling such complete relaxation, many want to go back in, but we get you safely wide awake for the rest of your day.

Myth 8: Hypnosis as a tool for pain management is bogus because your   mind cannot change pain if it is really there.

Fact: Your mind can change the way you perceive pain, respond to pain and reduce contributing factors to pain.

Myth 9: You do not remember what happens in hypnosis.

Fact: Most people have a very clear and detailed memory of hypnosis. Occasionally, when reaching deeper states some words or phrases are ‘lost’ to the conscious mind although the subconscious mind takes all in.

Myth 10: Hypnosis is voodoo and sacrilegious.

Fact: Major religions have accepted hypnosis, the Roman Catholic Church for 53 years – since 1956. Hypnosis was pioneered by James Braid, a physician and surgeon, not the “snake in Jungle Book,” but if you want someone with you for a session or two, that should be perfectly fine with your hypnotherapist.
